Two Rowans, two worlds/ timelines / realities … Story begins in alternative versions of 2015 California and Scotland

  1. Rowan, a middle-aged Kiwi novelist on set with movie producers in LA, heads east into the desert – on a tour with his wife – headed for Las Vegas, Moab, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde and Boulder. He is frustrated at the movie adaptation of his 2003 dystopian SF novel. Whilst away on the tour the movie company decide to promote his novel ahead of the release of the movie. At the same time the US is changed for ever after the inauguration of a new president who seems overly keen to sign draconian ‘executive orders’. Rowan’s book becomes an unlikely intellectual resource for the global antifascist movement (even though it is not set in the US). Moderate success turns into unwanted mega-publicity – which delights the movie company in California, but uneases Rowan and his wife.   2. Rowan (2) in this book is a Scottish alternative rock musician whose band, Interstitium, became reasonably famous in the late 1980s-early-1990s. He later found contentment in World Music, the love of his wife, political activism, and, as he aged, poetry, nonfiction and fiction (from 1998-2018). Embroiled in the Scottish independence vote as an internationalist, he is politically torn after the Scots decide against independence only to see the English move forward with a vote to leave the EU – against the wishes of the Scottish people. As ultra-nationalist movements threaten to seize power in a range of European countries, Rowan writes a host of songs responding to the situation. The tour that follows is full of drama …
